How toxic are you?

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Part 1

Exposure to potentially harmful chemicals on a daily basis is virtually unavoidable. The majority of the 85,000 chemicals registered for production under the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) were grandfathered in with little or no health and safety testing. It is estimated that around 2500 new chemicals enter our environment every year.

So what?

Here is the challenge. Over the last decade or so, as the evidence becomes more and more clear, we can say with confidence that exposure to toxic chemicals has an adverse effect on human health.

Medical conditions linked to toxic chemicals include;

  1. Obesity

  2. Metabolic Syndrome

  3. Diabetes

  4. Cardiovascular Disease

  5. Alzheimer’s

  6. Parkinson’s

  7. Cancers

  8. Multisystem complaints such as Fibromyalgia

  9. Multiple chemical sensitivities.

Part 1 - Reducing Home Exposure

In this first of a multi-part series we will examine the 6 core groups of toxic chemicals that are found in our homes, explain the potential exposure mechanisms, and how to limit or remove the exposure. We will also share some home hacks with you to make your home as safe as possible by using natural and safe alternatives. In this episode we will look at 2 groups

Group 1 - Phthalates

Both because of their ubiquitous usage and because they are not listed on product labels, phthalates are next to impossible to avoid. They are in household items (vinyl flooring), personal care products (hair care, body wash, some cosmetics), fragrance, household cleaners, and even food.

Group 2 - Per-fluorinated Chemicals (PFAS)

The primary concern when it comes to PFAS is the fact that they accumulate – not only in the environment, but also within our bodies. PFAS have leached their way into our water, soil, food, and air. Unfortunately, some level of PFAS can be found just about everywhere. They are often referred to as "Forever Chemicals" in the Functional Medicine community due to their accumulative effects.

Key Take-aways

These first 2 groups of chemicals are by their nature almost impossible to avoid, so the best defence is to limit your exposure in as many ways as possible.
